The overnight-stay figures come from a statistical area that this destination shares with Kos and Santorin. They cover the whole area, not Rhodos on its own.
Rhodes is the principal island of the Dodecanese and, at 1,401.5 square kilometres, close to five times the size of Kos. The old town of Rhodes Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Grand Master's Palace of the Knights stands in it; from 1306 they secured the island as a territory of their own. With them come three ancient cities, a wine district around the Attavyros and a wooded north.

The year as a table to read and to cite: crowd level for every month, plus weather comfort and temperature from the climate normals.
| Month | Crowd level0–100, season-relative | Weather comfort0–100, profile “mild” | Avg temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 0 | 44 | 11 °C |
| February | 0 | 52 | 12 °C |
| March | 2 | 66 | 14 °C |
| April | 17 | 86 | 18 °C |
| May | 51 | 93 | 22 °C |
| June | 78 | 82 | 27 °C |
| July | 93 | 68 | 30 °C |
| August | 96 | 69 | 30 °C |
| September | 72 | 83 | 27 °C |
| October | 37 | 90 | 22 °C |
| November | 5 | 75 | 18 °C |
| December | 1 | 51 | 13 °C |
The crowd level is season-relative: 100 is the annual peak of Rhodos itself, not the busiest destination in Europe. The figures say when it is quiet here — not where it is quieter than elsewhere.
Weather comfort 0–100 from the climate normals, profile “mild” – the same profile as the recommendation above, not the selection in the calendar. A “–” means the data for that month is missing.

Rhodes is the principal island of the Dodecanese and, at 1,401.5 square kilometres, the fourth largest in Greece by area and the third by population. It runs 78 kilometres long and 38 wide, rising to 1,215 metres at the Attavyros.
The old town of Rhodes Town, with its Grand Master's Palace and its walls, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Knights Hospitaller secured a territory on the island by treaty in 1306, had it granted by the Pope in 1307, and took the island in a planned campaign. From antiquity came the Colossus, some 34 metres tall, paid for by selling off abandoned siege engines and brought down by an earthquake in 227 BC.
Three ancient cities mark the island: Lindos, said to have been fortified as early as the Trojan War; Kameiros on the west coast, where the dig lays out a Hellenistic town plan in full view; and the acropolis of ancient Ialysos on the Filerimos hill, where a temple to Athena Polias, a Doric fountain building and an early Christian basilica with floor mosaics lie exposed beneath a later monastery. Hospitaller castles are scattered across the island: Kritinia, roughly 130 metres above its village and mixing Byzantine with Venetian work, and Monolithos on a free-standing rock that already carried a watchtower in antiquity.
The island divides in two: wooded in the north, bare in the south, in places without olive groves at all. That goes back to felling for shipbuilding at Lindos in antiquity and to forest fires in the nineties. In the north-west lies the Valley of the Butterflies, a wooded valley where one species gathers along the stream through the summer. At the southern tip, Prasonisi juts out, joined to the island only by a beach and a destination for wind- and kitesurfing.
A wine district lies around the Attavyros, and tastings are offered at Embona. On the east coast lies the thermal complex of Kallithea, ancient in origin, Art Deco in its buildings, reopened after restoration in 2007. Afandou has the island's longest beach at around five kilometres; at Faliraki little of the old fishing village's fabric remains. The church of Panagia Tsambika is reached by some 300 steps.
Against Kos, the first difference is size: Rhodes is nearly five times as large and close to four times as wide. Both carry Hospitaller castles, thermal springs and ancient sites. Rhodes, though, the order took for itself from 1306, and the Grand Master's Palace and the walls stand there, while Kos it bought in 1309; and where Rhodes carries three ancient cities, Kos has the Asklepieion. Vines grow on both islands; on Rhodes the wine district lies around the Attavyros, with Embona as its tasting village. The landscape is ordered differently too: a wooded north and a bare south here, a plain in front of an eastern ridge there.
