265 European travel regions carry a comparable bed occupancy, meaning the share of bed places taken in a typical summer week. The least occupied is Molise at 14.8 per cent, against a European median of 37.6 per cent. The table lists the 20 regions with the lowest summer occupancy, with temperature and access as context.

“Lowest occupancy” does not mean “empty”. Even the top region in this list has guests — its accommodation is simply the least taken. And the figure applies to the statistical region as a whole: a single busy town can be fuller than the regional number suggests.

Occupancy applies to the NUTS-2 region as a whole. In regions with one heavily visited place and much unvisited hinterland, that place can be far busier than the regional figure suggests. And it measures against the year-round bed stock: regions with a lot of seasonal camping look quieter outside the season than their open establishments are.
