How we calculate crowding
We work out how busy it gets ourselves. The basis is open, official data: European accommodation statistics from Eurostat and school-holiday and public-holiday calendars from 42 countries. The weather data from Copernicus sits alongside it and does not feed into crowding. No crowdsourcing, no scraping, no purchased phone data.
The figure is a forecast, not a measurement. We count nobody on the ground. From travel behaviour across Europe, holiday dates and the usual course of the year we estimate how busy a week in a holiday region is likely to be.
The official statistics have gaps, and we say which. Day visitors are not counted, yet in 2024 the EU counted some 1.67 billion day trips, more than overnight trips. Cruise passengers are missing too, and very small places to stay are not surveyed. Destinations that mainly draw day visitors and cruise ships (Venice, Dubrovnik, Santorini) therefore look emptier here than they are.
How the table comes about: per travel wish, the 15 most-visited regions, but only those where the weather suits that wish for at least 10 weeks a year, 12 for “Mild & pleasant”. That is why Paris is missing under “Sun & warmth” and Tyrol under “Mild & pleasant”, although both count many guests. In winter, piste kilometres count instead, and where the statistics lump several holiday regions together, one travel region stands in for them.
Frequently asked questions
When is Mallorca least crowded?
In spring and late autumn. The exact week is on the Mallorca page, where we show crowding and weather comfort side by side for every week of the year, plus one recommended and one to-avoid window. The same exists for each of the 282 travel regions with a crowding value.
Where in Europe is it not yet overrun in summer?
That depends on the week, not just the month: crowding across Europe shifts mainly with school holidays in the large source markets. The crowding map shows which travel regions are quiet in any given week, and the table on this page names the best window for the best-known destinations.
Where does the crowding data come from?
From official, open sources: Eurostat accommodation statistics and school-holiday and public-holiday calendars from 42 countries. The Copernicus weather data shown alongside does not feed into crowding. Combining them into a weekly value per travel region is our own calculation; how it works and what it cannot do is set out in the open on our methodology page.
Is crowding measured or estimated?
Estimated. The value is a model-based forecast from official statistics, not a head count on the ground and not real-time occupancy. Known limitation: day visitors and cruise passengers are missing from the underlying statistics, so destinations with heavy day tourism appear quieter here than they are.
Which travel regions and countries does HolidayHub cover?
