How we calculate crowding
We compute crowding from official data: Eurostat overnight stays and holiday calendars for 42 countries; no crowdsourcing, scraping, phone data.
The figure is a forecast, not a measurement.
Day visitors and cruises are missing; the EU counted 1.67 billion day trips in 2024.
Per travel wish, the 5 most-visited regions with at least 10 suitable weather weeks (12 for “Mild & pleasant”), in winter by piste kilometres alone.
Frequently asked questions
When is Mallorca least crowded?
In spring and late autumn. The exact week is on the Mallorca page, where we show crowding and weather comfort side by side for every week of the year, plus one recommended and one to-avoid window. The same exists for each of the 282 travel regions with a crowding value.
Where in Europe is it quieter in summer?
That depends on the week, not just the month: crowding across Europe shifts mainly with school holidays in the large source markets. The crowding map shows which travel regions are quiet in any given week, and the table on this page names the best window for the best-known destinations.
Where does the crowding data come from?
From official, open sources: Eurostat accommodation statistics and school-holiday and public-holiday calendars from 42 countries. The Copernicus weather data shown alongside does not feed into crowding. Combining them into a weekly value per travel region is our own calculation; how it works and what it cannot do is set out in the open on our methodology page.
Is crowding measured or estimated?
Estimated. The value is a model-based forecast from official statistics, not a head count on the ground and not real-time occupancy. Known limitation: day visitors and cruise passengers are missing from the underlying statistics, so destinations with heavy day tourism appear quieter here than they are.
Which travel regions and countries does HolidayHub cover?
288 travel regions across Europe, plus school and public holidays from 42 countries. Most travel regions have a weekly crowding score; for a small number the official data is not yet sufficient. There we show climate and accessibility, but no crowding.
